Dr Michael Flood is an Australian sociologist. His main topic is the critical study of men and gender, what some have termed 'men's studies'. Dr Flood conducts research on men and gender, interpersonal violence, heterosexuality, and other gender-related topics. He received a PhD in Gender and Sexuality Studies at the Australian National University (ANU) in 2001.
Dr Flood is currently a Research Fellow at La Trobe University's "Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society", conducting research on the primary prevention of violence against women.
Dr Flood also has had a variety of involvements as a profeminist educator and activist on issues of men and gender. In particular, he is involved in community advocacy and education addressing men’s violence against women. He is the coordinator of XYonline, a profeminist website providing a range of commentary and research on men and masculinities, male sexuality, feminism, the men's movement and male violence from a feminist perspective.
Some members of men's movements perceive Flood as an anti-masculist or a misandrist as he is highly critical of men's rights1, and father's rights2. However, Flood himself argues that efforts to engage men, whether in violence prevention or gender mainstreaming, must be based on a 'male-positive' commitment to enhancing men's lives. 3 They must be guided by principles of gender equality and social justice, and responsive to diversities among men.
Dr Flood is a co-editor of the International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities, and the author of academic papers on men and gender, men’s sexualities, violence against women, homosociality, fathering, anti-violence mobilisations, and youth and pornography. He is critical of heterosexual pornography and its influence particularly among boys and men,4 while supportive of sexual diversity and a pluralistic sexual politics. 5
